Bump Now Lets You Swap App Recommendations With A Tap

You can tell a lot about a person from their mobile app library. Are they avid Doodle Jumpers, or do they prefer to challenge their wits with a few rounds of Civilization? Do they stretch their vocal chords to the beats of T-Pain or Glee's background choir? You get the idea. Given how much time people spend building out their app libraries, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that they love to share their collections with friends. In fact, Bump ? an app that makes it easy to swap contact information, music, and other data between mobile devices ? says that users have been asking for an easy way to share lists of their favorite apps for ages, and that it's the second most popular request overall (behind music sharing, which has already been implemented). Today, all of those users are getting their wish granted.

HTC Desire HD in Black coming to Orange

Black is the new white
HTC Desire HD in Black coming to Orange. Phones, Mobile phones, HTC, HTC Desire HD, HTC Legend, 0

Orange is offering the HTC Desire HD exclusively in black the operator has confirmed for those looking for a phone that will go?deliciously?with their black tie.?

The phone, which is expected to be available "soon" is currently available for pre-order on the carriers site in the UK.

“Class and clarity - just two of the many attributes used to describe the HTC Desire HD Black,” says Orange hoping fans of the phone that have yet to snap it up will be swayed by the new black colour.

Aside from the colour, the rest of the phone is unchanged.

That means you’ll get a 4.3-inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen, a 1Ghz processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and 720p HD video recording functionality.

The OS for those that care is Android 2.2 rather than the latest version Android 2.3 however without detailing the Desire HD as one of the phones, HTC has hinted that some of it’s latest models will be getting the upgrade – here’s hoping.

It's not the first time HTC has launched a black version of one of its metal smartphones. In October HTC announced a black version of the HTC Legend.?

Sony PSP2 unveiled - codenamed NGP

Next Generation Portable
Sony PSP2 unveiled - codenamed NGP

Sony Computer Entertainment has given details of the successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and awarded it the codename NGP (Next Generation Portable).

It will feature a?new interface that translates actions into inputs, location based entertainment (through GPS) and?converge real and virtual worlds via augmented reality (AR).

The announcement came at the company's PlayStation Meeting 2011, a long overdue gathering in Tokyo to both celebrate the history of the brand, and to highlight new and interesting developments, including the new Android gaming platform PlayStation Suite (which will also work on the new console) and the NGP.

It looks similar to the original PSP, but features a 5-inch OLED touchscreen with a much-improved resolution of 960 x 544 (four times that of the current generation), four-core CPU (ARM CortexTM-A9) a much-improved GPU (SGX543MP4+) that?allows for PS3-style graphics, a second dual analogue stick, and a?Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer).

It's not particularly slim, with measurements of 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm,?but the back has touch technology for an all new way to interact with gaming. Plus, there are cameras front and back. And a new micro-analogue control stick has been added on the right of the console.

Surprisingly, the NGP will still use physical media for games content, although SCE has long ditched the UMD. Instead, content will come on memory cards. They look a bit like SD cards, but will no doubt be proprietary - this is Sony after all.

In connectivity terms, it will feature both Wi-Fi, like its predecessor, as well as 3G and Bluetooth 2.1. The console also sports a new user interface called LiveArea that sees a number of badges on the screen for users to select.

The LiveArea UI is the gateway to games or the PlayStation Network Store for DLC.

"Touch, Grab, Trace, Push, Pull," is Sony's tagline.

There will also be in-game trophies to collect, naturally.

Although details on the games themselves are still thin on the ground, the company demoed a showreel at the event which included?franchises such as: Hot Shots Golf, Gravity Daze, Killzone, Reality Fighters, Smart As, Broken, LBP, Little Deviants, WipEout, Resistance, and Uncharted.

Sony also offered a live demo of Uncharted with president of SCE Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida showing that you'll be able to?use the touchscreen to jump, or the X button. As Drake is on a vine, you can rock the NGP back and forth to generate momentum.

And the back touchscreen, which is the same size as the front OLED panel, can be used in conjunction for incredibly complex actions, as it tracks your finger on the rear with action on the face. Exciting, if weird, stuff.

Currently, plans are to roll out the NGP from the holiday season (Christmas) this year, although that is likely to be Japan first, if history has told us anything.

PirateBox: an "artistic provocation" in lunchbox form

When NYU art professor David Darts shows people his lunchbox, "a smile just starts creeping up on their face."

Painted black with a white skull-and-crossbones, the metal box doesn't hold a pastrami on rye; instead, it's stuffed with networking equipment and batteries, and it hosts a Debian Linux install running a barebones Python-powered Web server. The goal of this "PirateBox": to create an open file-sharing network in any public space, and to do with total privacy.

Inside the PirateBox sits a Free Agent Dockstar, an Asus WL330GE wireless router, and a SanDisk 16GB flash drive. The software, including Debian Linux and the DD-WRT open-source router firmware, is all free. The total build cost is under $100, not counting the lunchbox enclosure and the optional battery pack (the PirateBox can alternately run on AC power).

IntoNow Can Hear What You?re Watching On TV. The Media Check-In Game Just Changed.

"The problem was that no one wanted to type in the bar they were at," Adam Cahan told us when we met with him last week to see his latest venture, IntoNow. He wasn't talking about his startup. Instead, he was talking about Dodgeball, the location-based service that came well before Foursquare. That is, he wasdescribingwhy Foursquare took off while Dodgeball didn't, even though they had the same basic concept. GPS being built-in to smartphones changed everything, he said. "Now our industry is in the same place. We're the GPS layer." What industry is that? So so-called media check-in space. (Though don't use the word "check-in" around Cahan, he hates it.) More specifically, IntoNow is trying to own the tv engagement app space. And while competitors like GetGlue, Miso, TunerFish and others all beat IntoNow to market, they have a secret weapon: it's called SoundPrint. Just like GPS with location services, SoundPrint, a new technology created by IntoNow, allows you to automatically "check-in" to watching a show simply by hitting a button in the IntoNow app. How? It reads the sound waves and patterns of each television show (and a growing collection of movies as well) and matches it with a database they keep. Yep, it's a lot like Soundhound or Shazam, but for video content.

What is MWC?

A beginner's guide to the annual mobile phone expo
MWC explained

You might have noticed that we recently started bleating on about something called MWC 2011. There's little doubt that if you know your Android from your iOS then you'll be only too familiar with what we're going on about. However, if you're a recent convert to the world of technological geekery or you're simply confused by one abbreviation too many, then we probably owe you a few words of explanation.

MWC stands for Mobile World Congress and is the biggest event of the year in the mobile tech calendar. Organised by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association), it's the largest exhibition for the mobile industry and is where the networks, retailers, manufacturers and journalists from all over the world come together for an annual pow-wow to see what's on the agenda for the coming year.

The show always takes place in February, with MWC 2011 running from 14 to 17 February. The starting date of Valentine's Day will no doubt leave many attendees in the doghouse for choosing to spend time with a bunch of mobile phones rather than their loved one - or are they one and the same?

The exhibition first started in 1987 and up until a few years ago - 2006, to be precise -? it took place in Cannes, but the show has since moved to a new home in Barcelona, Spain. With a whopping 365,000m2 of floor space, the Fira de Barcelona is one of the biggest event venues in Europe and MWC is the largest exhibition that it hosts.

As well as a conference and plenty of keynote speeches and press events, MWC is also the place where most of the major manufacturers showcase their new mobile products for the coming year, allowing us to get some hands-on time with the new phones. The show also now incorporates a spin-off exhibition called App Planet which was visited by more than 6,000 app developers in 2010 and is set to be even bigger this year, with more exhibitors having signed up. Last year's MWC saw more than 49,000 attendees overall, including 2,400 journalists, representing 192 countries from around the world.

Some of the big exhibitions in the tech calendar, such as the Berlin-based IFA show, let the general public in to get up close and personal with the gadgets. However, MWC guards its wares much more closely, so unless you're a journalist or you work in the mobile industry then you won't make it though the door.

With the exception of Apple, which always does its own thing when it comes to exhibitions and product launches, all the big players of the mobile industry will be attending the show, so you can expect to see the latest news from the likes of HTC, Samsung, LG, and Motorola. It seems that Nokia will be attending, despite internet rumours that it wouldn't be taking part in the show this year. As well as the handset makers, the show will also play host to chipset manufacturers, such as Qualcomm, who are responsible for the technical wizardry under the chassis of your mobile, along with content providers, app developers and just about every other company under the sun that has anything to do with mobile technology.

Even if you haven't heard of MWC before, you've probably heard of many of the products that have made their debut there including the HTC Desire, HTC Legend and Samsung Wave, which were all unveiled at the 2010 show. We're also expecting plenty of hot product launches at MWC 2011, not least the Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone.

Team Pocket-lint will be travelling to MWC 2011 in Barcelona to bring you the latest tech stories. Armed with our technical expertise along with cameras, notepads, laptops and extensive caffeine supplies, we'll be storming the show floor to get up close and personal with as many of the new products as we can possibly get our paws on.

Retro phone case for the nostalgics
Thumbs Up to this 1980s yuppie iPhone case

Everyone knows that the 1980s was the defining decade of the 20th century. The A-Ha video was the pinnacle of CGI, Thundercats toys were available in the shops, neon clothing (especially clothing that had "Relax" printed on it) was cool, and big phones made us feel important.

Well, brake out your A-Team VHS box-set, sit back with a Tab Clear and slip your iPhone into the new Thumbs Up iPhone case - because you can look as hip as Ferris Bueller, without taking the day off.

This comically large case hugs your iPhone, giving you access to all of the controls still - but will definitely make you stand out from the iSheep crowd.

Wojtek Kolan, business development director and co-founder of Thumbs Up said: “There is nothing more iconic than Gordon Gekko, the moneyman hero of the eighties, and Del Boy, TV’s most popular wheeler dealer, wielding their status symbol mobile brick. Technology may have advanced to create tiny phones but it was only a matter of time before BIG was BIG again.”

The case fits the iPhone 2G, 3GS and 4 and will be available soon for ?12.99.

Video: Experiment Shows Cord-Cutting Simply Too Difficult For Average Families To Grasp

Here?s more evidence that regular people have zero time for things like Google TV, Boxee, and Roku, if only because they?re too complicated for their own good. Hill Holiday, a ?caffeine-fueled ad agency,? asked five Boston-area families to participate in a cord-cutting experiment. For one week each family was asked to forgo traditional cable TV in favor of one of the following devices: Apple TV, Google TV, Boxee Box, Xbox 360, and Roku. These devices, of course, are the premier devices for people looking to break free of their cable company while still being able to enjoy television. And how did it turn out for these five families?

Now... Angry Birds cupcakes

It's the latest baking craze
Now... Angry Birds cupcakes

Playing Angry Birds on your iPhone or Android device was the fad of 2010, and it seems as if the little chirpers are going to continue their worldwide domination in 2011, although not in a conventional way.

Because 2011 has already seen a sharp rise in an activity that first kicked in last year - baking Angry Birds cakes.

First up was Anya Richardson with her Angry Birds birthday cake, and that was followed by Kelly Williams' effort that started doing the web rounds earlier this week.

But now, we've seen what we think has to be the pick of the bunch - an almighty array of cupcakes, with incredible detail from non-professional baker Bobbie Alice, who has been tweeting about her baking prowess over the last few hours.

They are all in aid of "the little man" for his birthday - we're guessing Bobbie means her son, and not a Oompa-Loompa she's keeping hostage.

Best Angry Birds cakes so far? We think so, yes.

Update: Bobbie has got in touch with us to say "Yes my little man is my son Zac, he does slightly resemble a Oompa-Loompa." Sounds like an elaborate cover up to us. Someone call Willy Wonka.

Windows Phone GPS Emulator

All Windows Phone devices have a built-in Assisted GPS (aGPS), which is used by various phone applications including maps, camera, and search (to provide location-based search results). Developers can access location information on Windows Phone by using the System.Device.Location namespace, which is supported in .NET 4 and later. The GeoCoordinateWatcher class supplies location data based on latitude and longitude coordinates.

Working with the GeoCoordinateWatcher is relatively simple. Later in this piece, we?ll explain in more detail how to work with that class and how to test your application on a Windows Phone 7. However, sometimes your application requires more than just a single location, it requires tracking movement, and you may need to test how your application behaves in different locations.

At these times, it may look odd to be driving around the block with your Windows Phone attached to a laptop while you try to debug your application.

Don?t worry?you?re in good hands. The Windows Phone GPS Emulator (a small WPF application) and one WP7 DLL enable you to debug your application on the Windows Phone emulator or a real device without leaving the comfort of your home or office. Once you?ve completed your testing and debugging, you only need to change a single line of code to switch to the device back to real GPS.

With the GPS Emulator, you can set a location anywhere on the globe by using the map display. Furthermore, you can plan routes with multiple intermediate waypoints, or use Bing services to calculate driving directions between locations. Once you?ve planned a route, you can simulate driving through the pre-defined waypoints along the path.

The recipe includes:

  • The Windows GPS Emulator application
  • The Windows Phone GPS Emulator Client DLL
  • A simple Windows Phone Test client
  • A complete end-to-end Windows Phone App using Bings maps (a more complex sample)

Using the GPS Emulator lets you create complex path that you can playback just as if you were driving or walking. Then, you can choose your Windows Phone application and receive the location information form the GPS Emulator just as if you got it via the real GPS.

image

Using GPS Emulator with your Windows Phone Application

But first thing first, let?s figure out how does the GPS Emulator helps you debug your Windows Phone client application?

When you download the Windows Phone GPS Emulator recipe, you?ll notice there is an assembly called GPSEmulatorClient. This DLL has a class called GeoCoordinateWatcher, which is the same name as the System.Device.Location.GeoCoordinateWatcher class, just in a different name space. This homebrew, ?fake? GeoCoordinateWatcher class implements the IGeoPositionWatcher interface, which is the same interface that the ?real? System.Device.Location.GeoCoordinateWatcher class implements. Therefore, we can say that the GPSEmulatorClient.GeoCoorinateWatcher implements the same API as the real System.Device.Location.GeoCoordinateWatcher. This means that both classes are transparent to the developer in terms using the location APIs. We added all the functions that are not defined by the IGeoPositionWatcher interface but are public in the System.Device.Location.GeoCoordinateWatcher class. As a result, you can write your application to use the GeoCoordinateWatcher and only change the initiation process based on your environment. You?ll need to add a reference to the GpsEmulatorClient as well as the using GpsEmulatorClient; statement.

In the GpsEmulatorPhoneTestClient application, we define the symbol by using the #define keyword. Next, in the MainPage constructor, we use the #if GPS_EMULATOR statement to distinguish between our testing environment and a real device, as shown in the next code snippet:

// This line has to be the first line in the file
#define GPS_EMULATOR // defining a compiler GPS symbol.

// Init
IGeoPositionWatcher<GeoCoordinate> _Watcher;
#if GPS_EMULATOR
            _Watcher = new GpsEmulatorClient.GeoCoordinateWatcher();
#else
            _Watcher = new System.Device.Location.GeoCoordinateWatcher();
#endif

Since _Watcher is of type IGeoPositionWatcher<GeoCoordinate> both implementations?the real and the fake?can be casted to that variable. From this point on, it is simply a matter of using the GeoCoordinateWatcher method and properties to listen to location and status changes.

Working with the GeoCoordinateWatcher

As we said, the GeoCoordinateWatcher class is part of the System.Device.Location namespace. The GeoCoordinateWatcher class has the following properties:

  • DesiredAccurecy is of type GpsPositionAccurecy, which can be Default or High. High means the GPS readings are of high resolution, providing more accurate location (down to a few meters where possible). Note that High location resolution can shorten battery life.
    Note: One of the GeoCoordinateWatcher constructors has an input of GpsPositionAccuracy. By default it is set to Default, which means lower location resolution.
  • Permission is of type GeoPositionPermission, which defines the application?s level of access to the device. With Windows Phone you need to declare in your application manifest that you want to use the GPS device.
  • Position is of type GeoCoordinate and holds the current location, if the GPS status is valid.
  • Status is of type GpsPositionStatus, which indicates if the GPS readings are valid

There is one more property, MovementThreshold, which defines the minimum movement threshold, which by default is set to zero. You need to know that the GPS fires a lot of events, about one per second. That may not seem like a lot, but if you don?t move that fast or if your application doesn?t need to keep track at such a high resolution, make sure you set MovementThreshold to something other than zero. You can read more about this in a post by Jaime Rodriguez.

Next, you?ll want to register to the following events:

  • PositionChanged occurs when the location service detects a change in position, taking into account limitations like MovementThreshold
  • StatusChanged occurs when the status of the location service changes from Initializing to Ready, for example.

There?s not a lot more to it besides handling the events and updating your application accordingly. In our test sample, we simply read the values and print them on a screen, as shown in the next code snippet and image.

void watcher_PositionChanged(object sender, GeoPositionChangedEventArgs<GeoCoordinate> e)
{
     tbTimeAcquired.Text = e.Position.Timestamp.ToString();
     tbLatitude.Text = e.Position.Location.Latitude.ToString();
     tbLongtitude.Text = e.Position.Location.Longitude.ToString();
}

As you can see, the GeoPositionChangedEventArgs holds the position relevant to the location reading that triggered the PositionChanged event. The Position, which is of type GeoCoordinate class, includes, among other properties, Lat, Long, and time. It can include additional information, including VerticalAccuracy, altitude, speed, and more.

The output of our client application looks something like this:

image

The purple circle represents the current location transmitted by the Windows Phone GPS Emulator. It turns out that Microsoft building 24, where my office is located, is at Lat 47.6416 and Long -122.1306.

Follow a Few Rules

Before we dive into the technical details of the GPS Emulator, there are few rules you need to follow:

  • Run the GPS Emulator in Admin mode; it opens a WCF channel through which the Windows Phone application can read the location emulation.
  • Make sure the GPS Emulator runs before calling the GPSEmulatorClient.GeoCoordinateWatcher.Start method, as none of the demos really handles this scenario.
  • You?ll need to create a Bing Maps Account to fully access the power of the GPS Emulator. You can create an account here: http://www.bingmapsportal.com.
  • Remember to remove the #define GPS_EMULATOR symbol when testing on a real device.

The Windows Phone GPS Emulator is a great tool for testing your location-based Windows Phone applications without leaving the comfort of your home or office. But be sure you test your application on a real device, as location-based info or the lack of it could result in interesting edge cases in your application.

The Windows Phone GPS Emulator recipe includes detailed documentation including few samples and explanation on how the GPS emulator works.

Pocket-lint is expecting to get its grubby paws on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc handset pretty soon in order to give it a comprehensive review (you can check out our First Look in the meantime) but, just in case you were beginning to feel starved of Arc action, we thought that we'd bring you these two videos of the curvy looking Gingerbread handset.

The video above is basically handset-porn until about 1.20, but then there is a nice overview of the features on board and the one below shows off the UI nicely.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc was one of the stand-out unveilings over at CES, and will no doubt grab some headlines at Mobile World Congress next month ahead of a March or April launch.

Sky 3D gets 70,000 homes in 3D specs

Take-up figure revealed by broadcaster
Sky 3D gets 70,000 homes in 3D specs

Sky has finally confirmed some figures for its 3D TV service - revealing that 70,000 homes have signed up for the new platform.

Now, with Sky having 10 million subscribers, and over 3 million of these being Sky HD customers, 70,000 only represents a very small percentage of the total customer base - but for an extremely niche, and incredibly new market (remember, you need a 3D TV to receive the channel) Sky has every right to be more than happy with the up-take.

Sky’s chief executive, Jeremy Darroch, said today: "3D has got off to a great start with around 70,000 customers having signed up to the service in the first few months. We are very happy with the progress of 3D to date and are really encouraged by the feedback we are getting from customers."

John Cassy, Sky 3D’s channel director also pointed out that the figure means that almost half of all 3D TV owners in the UK are now connected to Sky 3D.

"The hugely positive response from customers, all of whom are tuning into Sky 3D on a weekly basis, gives us great confidence for the future," he said.?

"Coming up we will have our 100th live sports 3D broadcast, further cementing our position as a world leader in 3D sports production.?

"We are also continuing to increase the breadth of our 3D programming, including performances by Diversity, natural history documentaries from Sir David Attenborough, and another world first, an upcoming broadcast of ENO's new production of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia."

Sky 3D is available for free, to Sky HD subscribers provided you've got a 3D telly-box to watch it on.

Keep your eyes peeled to Pocket-lint for a forthcoming feature where we give you our opinion on Sky 3D after spending some time with it.
