Exclusive: IAC Hatches Hatch Labs, A Technology Sandbox To Incubate Mobile Startups

IAC has made a business out of developing or acquiring mobile applications based on its popular properties. In fact, IAC's mobile apps, which include apps for Match.com, CityGrid, UrbanSpoon, and Dictionary.com, have seen over 40 million downloads as of end of the year 2010. Today, we've learned exclusively that IAC is furthering its mobile strategy by launching Hatch Labs, a technology sandbox devoted to incubating mobile startups and innovations. Hatch Labs is the brainchild of Dinesh Moorjani, who was formerly the SVP of IAC Mobile. At IAC, Moorjani started the mobile group in 2007 and helped lead all product strategy for mobile. During his time, Moorjani helped doubled mobile revenue annually for IAC. He tells us that for the past five years IAC has been acquiring mobile technologies and apps, but this can be an expensive endeavor. Moorjani and the company wanted to help incubate more innovation within IAC, particularly in the mobile sector and thus Hatch Labs was born.

Google?s Music Search Engine Quietly Vanishes From The Web

At the end of October 2009, my colleague Jason Kincaid traveled all the way to Hollywood, Los Angeles, for the official unveiling of Google's new music search initiative by the Internet giant and its partners, Lala, Rhapsody, imeem and MySpace Music / iLike. He interviewed just about everyone involved about the news, and Mike Arrington followed up with a post basically calling out Facebook and Ticketmaster for not acquiring iLike instead of MySpace. In a blog post, Google said that, going forward, a simple Google web search would enable users to "search and more easily discover millions of songs". Queries for songs, artists or albums would return search results including links to an audio preview of those songs provided by its music search partners, at least in the United States - for starters.

Announcing Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch? Beta 2

Microsoft Visual Studio LightSwitch? Beta 2 is available for download! MSDN subscribers using Visual Studio 2010 can download the beta immediately with general availability on Thursday, March 17.

Please see ?What?s New in Beta 2? for information on new capabilities, installation options, and compatibility notes for this release. Unfortunately, due to the many improvements in Beta 2, projects created in Beta 1 cannot be opened or upgraded. You can find instructions for moving your existing projects forward on the LightSwitch team blog.

We are happy to announce that Beta 2 comes with a ?Go Live? license which means you can now start using Visual Studio LightSwitch for production projects!

Since the launch of Beta 1, the team has been heads down in working through your feedback and has made some improvements that I think you?ll agree are pretty cool.

  • Publish to Azure: the Publish Wizard now provides the ability to publish a LightSwitch desktop or browser application to Windows Azure, including the application?s database to SQL Azure. The team is planning a detailed tutorial of this experience that will get posted on the team blog later this week.
  • Improved runtime and design-time performance: Build times are 50% faster in Beta 2 and we have made the build management smarter to improve iterative F5 scenarios by up to 70%. LightSwitch Beta 2 applications will startup up to 30% faster than Beta 1. New features like static spans will include related data in a single query execution and improve the time to load data on a screen by reducing the total number of server round-trips. The middle tier data load/save pipeline has been optimized to improve throughput by up to 60%.
  • Runtime UI improvements: Auto-complete box, better keyboard navigation, and improved end-user experience for long-running operations.
  • Allow any authenticated Window user: When Windows authorization was selected in a LightSwitch app, you previously needed to add the Windows users who are allowed to use the application into the User Administration screen of the running application. This is cumbersome in installations where there are a large number of Windows users and when you just wanted to open the app up to all Windows users. The project properties UI now allows you to authenticate any Windows user in a LightSwitch application while still using the LightSwitch authorization subsystem for determining user permissions for specific users.

App stats for Microsoft's latest mobile OS
Windows Phone 7 in numbers. phones, mobile phones, Windows Phone 7, Microsoft 0

A year on from when the Windows Phone 7 developer tools were first made available to the app building community, the Windows Phone Developers Blog has posted some interesting app stats:

There has been 1.5 million downloads of the WP7 developer tools (Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone and Expression Blend 4 for Windows Phone) - "the number of downloads equates to the size of the entire population of Philadelphia".

36,000 people from the AppHub community have paid up to become members of the Windows Phone developer community.

And there are 11,500 apps now available for users. That's 11,500 proper apps, not lite apps or personalisation options. The team were keen to put the boot in on its rivals when it came to app counting as well.

"We recognise the importance of getting great apps on our platform and not artificially inflating the number of actual apps available to customer by listing 'wallpapers' as a category, or perhaps allowing competitor’s apps to run on the platform to increase tonnage," reads the blog.

"Finally, we don’t double and triple count apps which are submitted in multiple languages."

Of the 11,500 apps, 7,500 are paid apps and there are 1,100 apps that are generating developer revenue using the Microsoft Advertising Ad Control. Each WP7 users has downloaded an average of 12 apps.

It's also interesting to note that 60 per cent of the registered developers have yet to submit this app. A statistic that is sure to lead to an explosion in the figures above down the line.

Thinner Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 are coming to UK after all

10.1V not the only kid on the block
Thinner Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 are coming to UK after all

Samsung?has been in touch with Pocket-lint to confirm that, although representatives in the US told us that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 models weren’t likely to come to the UK, they will after all.

Sadly, it’s likely to confuse customers as much as it’s confusing us.

Samsung has given us the following statement:

“The 10.1 Tab from Samsung is going to be available in both the 10.9mm and 8.6mm versions in the UK. Neither version is being dropped in the UK.”

To recap on the rather confusing situation, Samsung first launched the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in February at Mobile World Congress, before announcing that it was going to be a Vodafone exclusive.

A month later, Samsung, worried by the launch of the iPad 2, went back to the drawing board, completely re-tooled and re-designed the look of the new tablet and then presented that newer version to the public at CTIA in Florida in March.

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1?became the Vodafone exclusive Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V, and the new, re-designed device named the Samsung Galaxy 10.1.

A Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9?was also launched at the same time. It sports an 8.9-inch screen as the name implies.

The 10.1 will be out in the US on the 8 June and the UK sometime after/over the summer. Vodafone’s 10.1V will be out in the next couple of months - before the 10.1.

The main difference between the two models is that the 10.1V will have a better camera (8 megapixels rather than 3 megapixels), be fatter 10.9mm thick compared to 8.9mm. Finally the newer, thinner model will feature Samsung’s TouchWiz UX skin on top of Honeycomb rather than just straight Honeycomb.

The question is, which one will you be going for - fat and early, or thin but with a wait?

BuzzFeed?s Jonah Peretti On Why The ?Facebook? Media World View Wins

BuzzFeed and Huffington Post co-founder Jonah Peretti talked at Web 2.0 Expo today about the much misunderstood subject of how to make something go viral (no it's not all about cats and bacon). Peretti began the talk running through his various early experiments in virality and what they taught him about why content spreads. As part of his theory as to why content that elicits a reaction from users has more of a penchant for going viral, Peretti contrasted Google and Facebook in terms of their approaches to information.

Phones4U: Just one iPad 2 per store...

...and Carphone Warehouse doesn't have many either
Phones4U: Just one iPad 2 per store...

Looking for an iPad 2 are we? Well if you’re thinking of getting one from Phones4U then you'd better be quick.

Our man on the street has just found out that Phones4U will be getting just one iPad 2 per store. That's just 50 units for its 50 nationwide stores across the UK.

Yep that’s right, unless you are first in the queue you should probably give up any hope and move on pronto to make sure you get in somewhere else.

Of course if you’re trying to avoid the massive?305 and counting Apple Regent Street iPad 2 queue, or others at Apple stores around the country, you might think of going to Carphone Warehouse. But you’ve got to be quick there too.

We’ve just been in the company’s Oxford Street store - deemed London inner city flagship - and they haven’t even got enough to supply a football team.

That’s right just 10 iPads in stock, presumably for Jesus’, or should that be Steve’s, 10 disciples.

Happy hunting.

APP OF THE DAY: Doodle Jump Hop The Movie (iPhone)

Classic gets Easter Bunny makeover
APP OF THE DAY: Doodle Jump Hop The Movie (iPhone). Mobile phone apps, iPhone apps, Hop The Movie, App of the day 0

How do you improve on a classic? Well it's a tricky ask, not least because classics usually hold a great deal of importance to the people who have watched, listened, read or played them. Ask any fan if they should remake Star Wars and they'll probably tell you where to go.

And although our app of the day doesn't quite have the cult status of Star Wars, and to be fair it's part of some wider merchandising for a film release, it's good to know that this update to the classic platformer Doodle Jump, keeps all of its charm and excellent playability - with just a change of character and visuals to spice things up - oh, as well as a few new additions.

Jumping on the back of the kid's Easter movie HOP, for those who haven't played Doodle Jump before the gameplay and task at hand is simple in the extreme: using your idevice's accelerometer guide your character onto various platforms by way of jumping; miss and it's game over. Doodle Jump: HOP The Movie follows this format pretty much exactly.

As you get higher the tension gets ever greater and the platforms ever-more perilous, and the level is cleared once you reach the top and find your special Easter egg.

There are 25 levels in all, with a new one being available everyday in the lead up to the Movie launch, so it should keep you going for a while; there's also all manner of platforms to try and get to grips with, a few of which disappear, explode and break. Your rabbit also has the ability to fire Easter eggs in order aid progress.

Not surprising, as the game's free, the in app advert gives you plenty of opportunity to buy tickets for the film, but even if you're not a fan of the movies this is definitely worth a look.

European GAME Retailer Buys 3DS Console From Down The Road, Sells At Markup

European video game retailer, GAME, has been handing out memos asking their employees to engage in some questionable business practices. The instructions told employees to take money out of the register and buy Nintendo 3DS consoles from the nearest Tesco supermarket -- which happens to sell the 3DS at a loss for $55 less.

While I was gone: Firefox 4, Windows Phone 7 update problems

I'm back in the office after a brief hiatus between March 22 and March 27. Here is what happened while I was gone:

Firefox 4. Mozilla released the new version of its free Web browser, Firefox 4 last week. It came a week after Microsoft released the competing browser Internet Explorer 9.

So far Firefox appears to be leading the pack with downloads. Firefox 4 was downloaded 7.1 million times in the first 24 hours. Internet Explorer 9 was downloaded 2.3 million times on the first day. In the first 48 hours, 15.85 million copies of Firefox 4 were downloaded.

The popularity of Microsoft's browser is hampered by the fact that it does not run in Windows XP -- it is only available for Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft has said in a statement it does not support XP with the latest browser because, "The browser is only as good as the operating system it runs on and a browser running on a ten-year-old operating system tethers the web to the past."

Also, the team that builds Internet Explorer is in the Windows division at Microsoft, which wants to drive upgrades to Windows 7.

Here is where you can download Firefox 4.

Problems with Windows Phone 7 updates. Microsoft acknowledged that it's having problems delivering updates to Windows Phone 7 users. Many people who bought Windows phones since they started selling in the fall have been anxiously awaiting this update because it adds the ability to copy and paste text.

Microsoft posted a video featuring Corporate Vice President Joe Belfiore, who also posted this comment on its website, "We know it?s been frustrating to wait for features/fixes and (probably worse) to hear little from us on specific dates. We are sorry the process has been rocky."

If you are a Windows Phone 7 user and you are still wondering dude, where's my update, Microsoft has also posted a frequently asked questions for Windows Phone 7 users about the update.

Observers are watching how Windows Phone 7 performs because Microsoft's smartphone operating system is so far behind Google's Android and Apple's iPhone in market share. Windows Phone 7 began selling on phones in the fall.

APP OF THE DAY: IncrediBooth (iPad 2, iPhone 4)

A surprise in every shot
APP OF THE DAY: IncrediBooth (iPad 2, iPhone 4). Mobile phone apps, iPhone apps, iPad apps, App of the day 0

With the release of Apple's latest iteration of iPad we thought it only fitting to feature an app which would allow you to take advantage of one of the few new features that the iPad 2 sports over its older sibling; in this case its front-facing camera.

Yes, with this photo-booth related offering you'll be able to re-live those moments of having your picture taken in a foul-smelling, dreary box; with the resulting image (after the obligatory 5 minute wait) giving you a look akin to a serial killer. It's just as well that the image would only be your official passport photo for the next 10 years.

IncrediBooth

Format
iPhone / iPod touch
Price
59p
Where

The other use for the infamous photo booth was when having a crazy time with buddies or a special friend, where you'd bundle into said dreary box to have your pic done, and its this experience that the app tries to jump on the back of (although Pocket-lint didn't get a special friend until 30 years of age and so is not talking from first-hand experience).

In practise and the app does everything very well with a quality feel throughout; the makers, Synthetic Corp, of Hipstamatic fame, clearly know how to put together a polished camera-based app.

Once you have everyone you want in frame, hit the button and you'll get four shots with four different retro effects, whereby you can share one or all of the photos through the usual channels. Time, date and location are also included.

There's no word on whether you'll be able to import lenses and filters from the Hipstamatic range, but if you're into the whole analogue-fad-on-digital-device thing then for the money this is well worth a look.

Microsoft expands Hotmail Active Views, hopes you never leave your inbox

Active Views were introduced to Hotmail last year to allow links to Flickr, YouTube, and Hulu to be viewed without ever having to leave your inbox. Instead, the content shows up within the e-mail message itself, allowing direct access to videos and slideshows. Today, Microsoft has announced that it is expanding the feature to include mail from LinkedIn, blogging service Posterous, Netflix, and deals site LivingSocial.

UK iPad 2 launch starts with chaos rather than a bang

Error message meets online buyers
UK iPad 2 launch starts with chaos rather than a bang. Apple, Tablets, iPad 2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Apple iPad 2, 0

Eager customers who have stayed up for the 1am online launch of Apple's iPad 2 have been met with countless error messages rather than order confirmations.

Not only were dedicated Apple enthusiasts disappointed to find out that they'd have to wait 2-3 weeks for their brand spanking new device to arrive, but many have complained that has been impossible to actually place an order at all. They are constantly being given the same message when trying to pay for their products: "Oops," the site continually states. "An error has occurred during your session.?Please return to the Store Menu to continue shopping."

Although the site has been retaining customers' basket information, numerous retries end up in the same failed loop.

So far, Pocket-lint is yet to hear from a single person who has completed a transaction. Indeed, we have been trying to complete the process ourselves, to no avail.

Maybe queuing for two days on a tatty London street was the right idea after all.

UPDATE: We actually managed to get a "processing" screen... And then it failed again.

UPDATE 2: As many have stated, changing their Apple Account to a 1-click account has allowed them to get through the process - although the confirmation email is unlikely to turn up any sooner than 90 minutes later. However, it seems even this method is now troubled too.

When we tried to access our own account details we were met with Apple's general "we'll be back soon" page. Sigh.

Hopefully, when the site returns, this whole mess will have been sorted out.

UPDATE 3: At 2.19am, our payment finally went through.

A very faint and feeble "woo-hoo". Goodnight all. Or good morning, to be precise.

Now just a 2-3 week wait. Lovely.
