DDOS attack?
You don’t expect the Beeb’s entire website to go down, but that’s what’s happened on Tuesday night in the UK with the BBC's news site, main site and even iPlayer going offline.
Although at the time of writing it’s unsure what the problem is, rumours are swirling around that it might be a DDOS or DNS poisoning attack.
“Both internal and external DNS are down, by the sounds of it,” explained Tim Weber, Business editor for the BBC News radio and interactive on Twitter.
Zipping over to http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/bbc.co.uk confirms the site is down.
In fact BBC staff are flooding to Twitter suggesting they can’t access internal email either.
Twitter was full of concerned BBC fans around the world wondering what had happened using the #bbcblackout twitter hashtag to vent their thoughts and unconfirmed rumours that Anonymous were claiming responsibility for the attack:
“Anonymous claim credit for taking down BBC website in solidarity with the union anti-cutters, the black bloc, UKUncut and occupiers!” Tweeted one user.
"Anonymous threatens to take down bbc.co.uk Now their four nameservers are unresponsive & site down. Coincidence?" says Twitter user?Lynne Pope.

UPDATE: Jeremy Hillman, the BBC Business and Economics Editor has tweeted: "We are trying to fix the BBC website, we believe serious technical fault rather than DOS attack but too early to confirm"
UPDATE 2 (23:47 BST): Steve Herrman, Editor of the BBC News website tweets: "We are having technical problems with the #bbc website - they are being looked into urgently. Apologies."
UPDATE 3 (23:50 BST): And just like that the site appears to be back up and running.?
UPDATE 4 (23:52 BST): Nevali, described as a Metadata magician at the BBC has confirmed that the site is back up citing on Twitter that "it's not a DoS attack. routing went away. software config or hardware problem." before adding a further tweet that it's "utter tosh" that it was linked to Anonymous.
UPDATE 5 (23:56 BST): Andy Butterworth, another BBC employee is citing on Twitter that the "Incident report says it was a network failure."
