HTC backtracks: Gingerbread update for HTC Desire after all

Make your mind up
HTC backtracks: Gingerbread update for HTC Desire after all. phones, mobile phones, gingerbread, HTC Desire, HTC 0

Oh dear, we'll put this one down as a PR disaster that everyone can just forget about shall we?

Just one day after stating that the HTC Desire would not be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, the Taiwanese company has backtracked and said that, in fact, it will.

Speaking via its UK Facebook page the company said:

"Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire."

It's good, if somewhat bizarre news. We wonder what happened to the memory issues that the company talked about only one day prior when it said:

"Our?engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones.

"However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you."

Hmmmm. Is there suddenly more memory available? Or has HTC figured out a way to botch Gingerbread and Sense together on the Desire to quieten down the uproar the cancellation statement caused?

Let's hope there's not going to be a compromise on user performance just to alleviate some bad press.

We'll be keeping an eye on this one.....
