Android 2.3 device coming this summer
Waaaaaay back in October 2010 Motorola detailed the Motorola Spice - a slider QWERTY packing handset and a 3-inch screen. And today Motorola has gone official with the newest version of the Spice, which ditches the slider QWERTY in favour of a bottom position fixed one and shaves 0.2-inches off of the screen.
Confusingly, the phone (model number XT316) won't launch in Europe as the Spice though. Here it will be known as the Motorola Fire.
So, house keeping aside - what are we looking at?
Well, the Motorola Fire is a Froyo device at present that will come packing Gingerbread by the time it launches "later this summer". It's got a QVGA touchscreen, a 3-megapixel camera and a microSD slot that can handle up to 32GB.
It runs Moto Switch UI and connectivity is 3G (HSDPA), Wi-Fi, GPS and there is an FM radio in there too.
"With a fun, beautiful design and a great package of social media options, Motorola XT316 gives busy users the smartphone experience they crave at a price they can afford," said Fei Liu, senior vice president, Mass Market Consumer Products, Motorola Mobility.
"With the combination of the physical QWERTY keyboard, the touchscreen display and access to the entertaining apps and games, the Motorola XT316 outperforms other low cost mobile devices."
No word on cost yet, but expect the Motorola Fire to take on the likes of the HTC ChaCha and the as-yet-unannounced LG Optimus Pro C660.
