Henry "Hank" Vigil, Microsoft's senior vice president for strategy and partnership, is retiring.

His retirement was first reported by AllThingsD Friday and confirmed today by Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos.

Vigil, reports to Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, has worked at Microsoft for 25 years. He led deal teams that cemented partnerships between Nokia and Windows Phone, and Facebook and Bing, according to Microsoft. He also worked with Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith to rebuild the company's relationships with former Microsoft rivals AOL, Sun Microsystems, Novell, RealNetworks and IBM, according to his Microsoft biography.

He will leave the company in the fall, but will continue to do consulting for Microsoft. Gellos said the company does not yet have details on a replacement plan.

"He?s been a critical strategic adviser and bridge-builder on some of the biggest industry opportunities we?ve dealt with in recent years," Ballmer said in an email to Microsoft employees that AllThingsD obtained and Microsoft confirmed.

Here is a Seattle Times story about a 1999 WebTV deal Microsoft did that Vigil worked on.

Here is a 2004 story our Sunday magazine Pacific Northwest did of Vigil's nine-acre property on Hood Canal. Legend has it that Clark Gable stayed there. Gellos did not know whether Vigil still owned it. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates also owns a chunk of land along Hood Canal.
