Sequoia Leads $10 Million Investment In Dolphin, The Customizable Android Browser

The desktop browser wars are fiercer than ever, with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and *cough* Internet Explorer all in a heated race for users (and new features). But there's a relatively new market that's still ripe for a surge in browser innovation: mobile.

All of the aforementioned browsers already have mobile incarnations, but there are some new mobile-only browsers popping up as well. And today MoboTap, the company behind the Dolphin Browser, is getting a big boost: it's announcing that it's closed a $10 million Series A funding round let by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Matrix Partners. Sequoia partner Kui Zhou will be joining MoboTap's board. The company first launched the Dolphin browser 15 months ago ? it?s since been downloaded 8 million times, and has 4 million monthly active users (1 million of whom are using the app daily). And it?s growing quickly, with 30,000 new downloads every day, which works out to around a million per month. Usage is concentrated in the US, which has 80% of the total downloads, and the remaining user base is mostly in Asia.

Best selling Vinturi wine aerator hits UK shelves

Breathe deeply
Vinturi wine aerator hits UK shelves

The Vinturi Essential Wine aerator has been blazing a serious trail among US wine buffs who applaud it for its breathing process acceleration. And now it's come to the UK.

What is breathing process acceleration you might ask? Well, wine that has been allowed to breathe usually tastes better, but you have to wait. The Vinturi just speeds things up, reducing wait times from an hour to an instant.?

The design uses something called Bernoulli's principle which, quite frankly, has Pocket-lint a bit baffled. In the simplest possible terms, the wine moves quicker through the aerator, lowering pressure and drawing in air. All you need to do is hold it over a glass and pour through.?

Expect to pay around ?26 for the device, which allegedly brings out the best possible flavour, aroma and finish from wine.?

Those who like their food and drink in slightly more take-away orientated form could also consider the eatensil. A useful junk food multi-tool consisting of things like a pizza cutter and chopsticks.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray hands-on

Up close and personal
Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray hands-on

Sony Ericsson has shown off its new Xperia Ray smartphone at a showcase event in London, 2 months ahead of the UK release in September and we were there to grab a hands on.

The new phone, which feels and looks a lot thinner in the flesh than the press shots we’ve seen prior, will come with Android 2.3.4 (the model we played with still had 2.3.3) and boast the same Bravia engine found on the Xperia Arc launched earlier in the year.

That new screen technology is clearly visible with a vibrant 3.3-inch display that is not only crisp, but has an incredible viewing angle (as our pictures show). The "reality display" 854x480 pixel resolution definitely helps add to the phone's media and browsing experience.?

That crisp display also helps get around the fact that the screen is smaller than other Sony Ericsson handsets on the market and should mean that you won’t have to squint too much when it comes to getting it out of your pocket.

An 8.1-megapixel camera complete with Exmor R technology keeps up the high quality imaging standard set by the recently released Xperia Arc. 720p HD video recording is also possible.

The hardware itself is just 9.4mm thick and only 100g in weight. Perhaps not quite Galaxy S II slim but definitely tiny enough to feel compact in the hand. Sadly no dual-core action to be had with the Xperia Ray, still thanks to Sony Ericsson's redesigned approach to Android, it is snappy enough with a 1GHz processor under the hood.

Aside from the rubberised matte finish on the back of the case, there isn’t much more to share with you at this time - our play was brief - but you can be sure we’ll bring you a full review when we get to play with the new phone over a longer period, no doubt nearer launch day.?

New Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK Coming Next Week!

Yesterday the Microsoft Surface Team announced that next week they will be releasing the Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK and other tools for developers to start developing Surface applications for the next generation Surface device ? the Samsung SUR40. Starting on July 12th, the SDK will be available for download free to anyone who wants to start developing new Surface applications from the Microsoft Download Center (have you seen the new Microsoft Download Center by the way?).

Back at CES earlier this year, Mike Angiulo (Corporate Vice President of Windows Planning, Hardware, and PC Ecosystem) lifted the covers off of Microsoft Surface 2.0 during the keynote. Mike showed off the Samsung SUR40 which is a 4-inch thick 40-inch HD LCD screen with a Windows 7 PC built in. It can be used as a table or mounted to a wall.

One other cool thing about the Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK worth taking note of is that you can use it target apps for both Microsoft Surface hardware and Windows 7 touch-enabled PCs too!

For more on the new Microsoft Surface 2.0 SDK, I suggest reading this blog post from Luis Cabrera-Cordn who is a Platform Program Manager on the Microsoft Surface Team.

Now I?m off to see whose car (or cars) I need to wash to get myself a Samsung SUR40!

Live Twitter Chats

We know you have a lot of questions and ideas about Windows 7, Windows 7 PCs, Windows Live and more. We see the comments in the blog posts, via tweets and in our day to day conversations with people all around the world. So, we thought: ?Why not give people a time to talk with us directly?? We want to answer all your questions, share knowledge that might not make it into a blog posts and share anecdotal stories that show a little behind the scenes glimpse into our life. Do you know the voice behind @Windows is a tried and true New Yorker? Or that @benthepcguy is trained in Krav Maga? While these things seem trivial, they provide a glimpse into how we see the world of PCs and we think the more we share, the more you?ll learn. So, here?s what?s going to happen.

Live Twitter Chats

Live Twitter chats with Windows will start tomorrow on July 12th and happen every Tuesday for an indefinite amount of time. Each week we will have a topic and spend 1 hour answering your questions. You?ll be able to address topics to @benthepcguy, @brandonleblanc, @kristinalibby, @windows, and @windowsblog. Of course, we may punt the question off to whoever knows the best answer, so pay attention for tweets, RTs, and DMs.

To get involved, join us tomorrow from 12pm- 1pm PT. That?s 3pm-4pm ET for those on the opposite coast. Use the hashtag #win7tech, bring some great questions and see what we are planning to talk about. This week?s talk is about ?Back to School PCs? and will feature some of our favorites, some you might have never seen and we?ll answer your buying questions. In the meantime, leave some questions in the comments below and we will answer those first during the chat.

Note we will only be talking about the outlined topic each week and we will not be answering questions outside those topics. Questions for this week may including: what?s the best PC for a fashion-savvy English studies major, what?s the best gaming pc for my freshman son or what are secrets to note-taking during class?
