Google Doodle lets you control the lunar eclipse

Funky Doodle for moon activity
Google Doodle lets you control the lunar eclipse. internet, online, google, Google doodles, 0

Google has been rolling out some pretty funky Doodles as of late (most notably the awesome Les Paul guitar themed one) and the latest effort is none too shabby either - an interactive Doodle that lets you control the lunar eclipse.

When loading up the Google front page, the cycle of the eclipse plays through in its entirety in a couple of seconds but after that you are in control of the slider bar.

The June lunar eclipse is the first of two eclipses for 2011 (the next one is in December) and is the longest in nearly 11 years.

It can be seen in parts of Europe, Africa, Central Asia and Australia although the best time for the UK has been and gone - 7.22pm until 9.02pm on 15 June - when the eclipse hit totality.

The shadow will last until 11pm though - so quickly take a look see out your window before it's too late. Or just play with the Google Doodle instead.

Skype video calling coming to Comcast

Skype video calling is coming for Comcast cable television subscribers, the two companies said Monday.

With the new Comcast service, people who subscribe to Comcast's high-definition video service will be able to make video calls on Skype through their television. It will require some new equipment: an adaptor box, a video camera and a special remote control that has a keyboard for people to type text on.

Microsoft has proposed buying Internet phone service Skype, based in Luxembourg, for $8 billion. With the new Comcast-Skype partnership, Microsoft would gain another entryway into television and delivering software into people's living rooms via cloud computing. Currently, Microsoft's most succesful product for television is its Xbox 360 video game console.

"By combining Comcast?s broad living room reach with Skype?s innovative communications platform and worldwide community of users, we can bring video calling into the heart of the home allowing people to share life?s experiences both big and small," Skype Chief Executive Tony Bates said in a statement.

Bates is expected to become president of a Skype division at Microsoft.

Comcast, which is based in Philadelphia, will begin testing the service in the next few months. The companies did not say when the service will become available for subscribers or how much the Skype service will cost.

Leveraging your Android development expertise to build Windows Phone applications

Following up with the Windows Phone guidance and API mapping tool for iPhone developers I wrote about a few weeks ago, today we are releasing a comprehensive package for Android developers to easily learn Windows Phone and port their app to Microsoft’s phone platform.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I think it is essential to be a “polyglot” developer. And although you might have a preferred language, opening your mind to others will bring considerable value to your abilities and your resume. It’s true that jumping from one platform or language to another can break your habits, but change can be stimulating and will ultimately expand your opportunities.

How can you leverage your Android development expertise to build Windows Phone applications?

There’s no magic wand that will do the work for you, but we have put together a great package to help you get started.

The package consists of:

Windows Phone API mapping tool: now includes Android

clip_image002We’ve added Android to the Windows Phone API mapping tool to help developers find their way around the Windows Phone platform. Think of the API mapping tool as being like a translation dictionary. For example, let’s say that you’re planning a vacation to France. Since you don’t speak the language, you’ll bring a pocket travel dictionary. Having this tool will surely help you get an idea about what you are ordering from a restaurant menu, but you’ll have no idea what the actual recipe is -- nor will you be able to have a conversion in French with the server! But it’s a great learning tool to make the first steps.
Give it a try!

API mapping tool: open for feedback

When we opened the API mapping tool, we invited developers to offer up their ideas (http://wp7mapping.uservoice.com) about what mapping we should cover. With this new version including Android, we’ve also introduced the possibility to add comments directly on the existing mapping. So if you want to provide additional details or if you spot something inaccurate, just add a comment, we’re listening!

Getting help when porting your applications?

clip_image003Mapping is tedious on-going work. Don’t expect a mapping for all of the APIs, simply because the platforms are built upon different architectures and user interfaces. We’re working on expanding the coverage of the API Mapping tool for both iOS and Android, but there will be some situations where you might be stuck, not knowing what way to port your feature over from iOS or Android to Windows Phone. We’re willing to help!

We have hired the “App Guy” who crawls developer forums aggregating discussions from different locations to answer questions related to porting iOS and Android applications to Windows Phone, but hey, that’s just one guy for now, anybody can help out. Tell us if we’ve missed something and tag your questions/answers so that we can find them (see guidance) and show them off.

What’s next?

We are continuing to expand the scope of the API Mapping tool and the technical guidance. Our next step is to include the Mango features into the API Mapping tool (planned for this summer).

As mentioned above, we’re open for feedback and if you want to share your “porting” story let me know, we already have a few, like the Groundspeak Geocaching app.

Lomography LomoLab officially launches

Remote film processing service goes live
Lomography LomoLab officially launches

Analogue camera brand Lomography is now offering the LomoLab? remote processing service to all UK customers. The new service, which was exclusively revealed to Pocket-lint back in February 2011, is now live, having been in beta-testing mode since March.

Until now, Lomo users have had to go into one of the Lomography Gallery stores in order to get their films developed, or alternatively take them to a high-street shops, not all of which are set up for coping with Lomo elements such as cross processing and sprocket film developing.

The LomoLab mail order service means that you can simply visit the website, order the services you require and send in your films in the envelope provided (you'll get a new one each time you get your prints back). As soon as your films have been processed, you'll be sent a link so that you can view and download them straight away with your prints and negatives following on in the post.

The LomoLab itself is housed in the basement of the Lomography Gallery Store East London, where the team of operators includes photography graduates with years of professional photo-processing experience and is led by the 'LomoLabRat' (aka Mr Jack Quick). The LomoLab can cope with most types of processing including 35 and 120mm film, standard colour, black and white, cross processing, panoramic shots and sprocket hole photography.

The service has been set up in response to the dimishining number of photography labs that are able to cope with all sorts of film. Lomography UK's online manager, Heidi Mace, told Pocket-lint: "Labs closed down left right and centre as digital photography became all the rage. However the Lomographic community is evidence that people still love shooting film. We sell more cameras and more film every single month, the analogue photography community is growing and growing, and those people need somewhere to get their precious films developed that will treat them with the individual love and care they deserve.

"The LomoLab experts don’t just chuck your films in a machine and forget about them, they lovingly put their years of experience to use, to make sure you get the best quality service to reward the effort you've gone to, to shoot a great roll of film.

"The LomoLab has been running in London for a while, and we are regularly asked by people all over the country where they can process their films, so we are really excited to be able to offer our services to every roll of film in the UK, whether you live in Betty Hill, Penzance, or anywhere in between."

Stop Punching Yourself in the Face

Hark has been an amazing ride so far, and the best is still yet to come. It is more often than not extremely taxing (mentally, physically, emotionally, financially) but I strongly believe that people who are wired this way simply must do it - birds gotta fly, bees gotta sting, honey's got to be beared, entrepreneurs gotta entrepreneur. To encourage other to join into my shared hysteria, I have also recently publicly committed to helping more startups out - especially in Seattle. And, as the recent startup weekends and broad financial activity show, there's lots to be excited about up here. However, time and again, I run into the same critical flaw that dooms vision after vision from becoming real. So what is this fatal flaw that is infecting the community? Simple - caring about what you release.

The entrepreneur faces many obstacles in her march to glory. Constantly shifting markets, new competition, running out of money, finding great employees and thousands of more issues will crop up that will stop her from changing the world. But nothing is a larger or more ever present as a blocker than her own self-doubt.

Ira Glass had a great quote about creative types which is extremely applicable here. I tried to abbreviate this, but it's too good in its whole, so I'll just steal reprint the whole thing:

"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through."

This is so true - and so relevant for the entrepreneur. It may be taste, or commitment to quality, or desire to change the world, but there will be a huge doubt in your mind when you look at what you are about to release and you will hate your final product. I promise you it will be crap, and, without fail, it will make you want to give up before you have even gotten it out the door. But, the real failure is not releasing a piece of garbage - that is part of the process. The REAL failure  is NOT RELEASING ANYTHING AT ALL.

Here's how this works - you come up with a great idea, you come up with fifteen more facets to the great idea, you meet with twenty-five people who all think it is a great idea, and then … nothing. More often than not I will see developers pivot a hundred times, adding more and more to the MVP until it is so bogged down with all the new things you want and/or it has such a high bar for initial quality that it will NEVER make it out the door. When I meet with entrepreneurs who have a solid idea and are well on their way, almost always the first thing I say is "why are you meeting with me, you should be developing!" Every second until that first product is out the door is precious - use them wisely!

Let us do a simple break down on the pros and cons of waiting to release. Start with the cons:

  • A new competitor could enter the marketplace with a product
  • A new/existing competitor could get more money (that should have been going to you)
  • A new/existing competitor could implement your killer feature
  • A marketing partnership could be missed due to timing issues (namely you don't have a product to partner with)
  • The world could move on and implement something half assed that is enough to take the wind out of your sails.

Ok, onto the pros of waiting:

  • Nothing. There are no pros. Period.

Some may say "well, you only get one chance to make a first impression." Despite Head and Shoulder's marketing campaign, this is ridiculous. First impressions only matter if you never plan on updating your product ever again, or feel like completely ignoring your audience - remember, hating your product means at least they care about the product to have an emotional connection. This is a good thing!

Let's be clear - it is PERFECTLY valid to not go out and do a startup. And it's perfectly valid to have an idea that would be cool, but not feel like pursuing it. But do not pretend that you are gung ho on changing the world, or waste even 20 seconds thinking about what it would be like if you built the next greatest thing if you are not 100% focused on getting things out the door. Real artists ship - get to it.

Nokia settles lawsuits with Apple

Thumbnail image for Stephen_Elop_012.jpgMicrosoft partner Nokia has settled its lawsuits with Apple, the company said Tuesday.

Apple will pay Nokia a one-time payment and royalties going forward, Nokia said. The company said it is keeping the financial terms of the deal confidential, but the deal will increase operating margins in Nokia's second quarter financial report.

The two companies will also withdraw their complaints to the US International Trade Commission.

Nokia, a global phone maker based in Finland, sued Apple for patent infringement.

"We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees," said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia, in a statement. "This settlement demonstrates Nokia's industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market."

Elop is former president of Microsoft's Business division, which makes Office and other software.

Microsoft and Nokia have a partnership to make Windows Phone the primary software on Nokia smartphones, and Elop expects the first phones to hit the market in the fourth quarter of this year.

Nokia's stock has risen 4 percent in intraday trading to $6.39 per share.

Nokia shutting up shop in the UK

Elop's big trim continues...
Nokia shutting up shop in the UK. phones, mobile phones, Nokia, Stephen Elop, 0

Nokia has admitted defeat with regards to its online store platform - with news that the UK store is to shut along with other European outlets such as France, Spain and The Netherlands.

The UK closure was confirmed by an email from Nokia to affiliate digital marketing outfit TradeDoubler, with a closure date of 30 June stated. A Spanish Nokia bod also told Engadget: "Prices are too subsidised by the carriers and sales were low, so they will keep providing support."

The move comes during a turbulent time for the once undisputed mobile heavyweight champion. Recent financial results were very disappointing - shares dropped by 15 per cent after its?second quarter 2011 outlook and the company stated that it?"now expects Devices & Services net sales to be substantially below its previously expected range of 6.1 billion euros to 6.6 billion euros for the second quarter 2011 "due to lower than previously expected net sales" - and straight-talking and hard-hitting CEO Stephen Elop also oversaw the slashing of 4,000 people from its payroll, and the offloading a further 3,000 more.

With Nokia's Windows Phone 7 revolution all scheduled for later this year, there is light on the horizon but whether that light shines bright enough to save the former king remains to be seen.
