CES 2011: Announcement in Vegas
Qik, the video calling solution for many BlackBerry and Android users, has been bought out by VoIP giant Skype for a reported $150 million (earlier reports has suggested a price-tag $50 less than this).
Skype announced the takeover during its presentation over in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show, where it also revealed deals to bring video calling to Sony and Panasonic devices, and that it was releasing a new premium video service.
Skype CEO Tony Bates confirmed the acquisition via a video message on the company's YouTube channel.
"Qik compliments a lot of what we've been doing in terms of video realtime services," he said. "Qik's engineering talent and product suite really compliments what we've been doing here at Skype
