CES 2011: Ballmer gives keynote about Microsoft

LAS VEGAS -- Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show Wednesday night.

6:50 p.m. Netflix and HuluPlus on Xbox Live can also be controlled with voice and gesture with Kinect.

7:04 p.m. This spring Avatar Kinect will be made available for free to all Xbox Live gold members. It's your avatar hanging out virtually.

7:06 p.m. Ballmer said, "In 1st 60 days we sold more than 8 million Kinect sensors worldwide." Also, 50 million Xbox 360s sold worldwide.

7:08 p.m. The game "Fable" will be available on Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7.

7:12 p.m. Copy and paste coming in Windows Phone 7 update.

7:13 p.m. Windows Phone 7 software will be ready for Verizon Wireless and Sprint. Ballmer said today 155 new apps were made available in the Windows Phone marketplace.

7:15 p.m. Windows Phone 7 demo of camera and home screen, search, hubs, OneNote.

7:22 p.m. Ballmer back. Moves on to PCs, does not give sales numbers for Windows Phone.

7:24 p.m. Windows 7 now on 27 percent of all PCs connected to the Internet, Ballmer said.

7:26 p.m. Now getting demo of new PCs, laptops and slates running Windows 7, using new chips: Acer dual-screen PC with two touchscreens, Samsung slider series running on Intel Oak Trail with no fan, Asus tablet PC that comes with a keyboard -- last one is available now on Amazon.com at Microsoft store, but will cost around $1,000.

7:30 p.m. New Surface, made by Samsung, four inches thick, uses technology called Pixel Sense where each pixel acts like a camera.

7:40 p.m. Ballmer is now talking about why it matters that next version of Windows will run on system on a chip, such as ARM designed chip sets. "Windows has the breadth and depth and the flexibility to define and deliver this next generation of devices to customers through the innovations of our partners," he said.

7:48 p.m. Speech over.
